A cold fighting infusion

It's really cold in New York City today. With the wind gust, it feels like twenty degrees below zero. But that did not stop me from waking up early on a Sunday morning to go to the neighborhood farmers market, which is only here once a week. 

Here I am, bundled up like the child from The Christmas Story, carrying two eco bags, in the hopes of getting some fresh eggs and grass-fed beef at the market. It turns out that the farmers chose to stay in their warm homes rather than stand out there shivering at a cold. windy, corner -- smart. There were two stands at the market today -- one a composite stand and the other was Bread Alone. 

Okay, plan B: go to the supermarket. I didn't feel too bad that my farmers market peeps abandoned me because my local supermarket is great. Their produce, (talking about local supermarket), in my opinion, is comparable to those at a farmers market but they lack in their selection of grass-fed meats and the eggs they carry, even though organic, is far far FAR from comparable to those fresh eggs at the farmers market. As I was wandering around the supermarket thinking about what I need for the next few days, a little bottle of orange spice caught my eye. It was turmeric. I put this wonderful bottle of spice in my basket thinking that it might come in handy for making an infusion if Ed or I start feeling a tingle in the throat.

As I walked through the apartment door, I hear a cough followed by, "Honey, my throat hurts." 
Seriously, turmeric couldn't have come at a better time...

To make this infusion, first thinly slice an organic lemon. I think the peel of the lemon packs a lot of flavor into the infusion but if organic lemon is not available to you, then slice the lemon and cut away the peel.

Grate half a tablespoon of ginger.

Add an eighth of a teaspoon of turmeric powder.

One tablespoon of delicious raw honey.

Now put all your ingredients in with 3 cups of boiling water, give the mixture a quick stir until the honey is dissolve, and allow to steep for 20 minutes. I use a large carafe so the infusion stays hot while it steeps. After the first batch of the infusion is finished, I would add a little bit more honey, ginger and turmeric and fill the carafe with hot water over and over again so I can sip on this infusion throughout the day. Word of advice, don't drink too much of it though, the acid in the lemon can really open up an appetite and make you super hungry!

Lastly, strain the infusion with with a small mesh strainer and drink to your health! Cheers!

Lemon, Ginger and Turmeric Infusion

Ingredients:

4 slices of lemon, thinly sliced
1/2 tablespoon ginger, grated
1 tablespoon raw honey
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
3 cup boiling water

Put the lemon slices, ginger, turmeric honey and boiling water in a carafe. Stir until the honey is dissolved. Cover and allow to steep for 20 minutes. Strain with a small mesh strainer before serving. 

Things that I recommend to make infusions:
A stainless steel thermal carafe, 
and a small mesh strainer.
