I love my husband. He is supportive. Smart. Loving. Handsome. But he is also downright crazy with fad diets and fad workouts. Here are some, but not all, the fad diets and fad workouts he has tried: Atkins diet, the juice diet, the zone, P90, P90x, and Insanity. I spent countless hours researching his new found diets, so I can plan his meals accordingly, and he spent hundreds of dollars buying equipment and videos for his new found workouts.
When he first heard of Atkins diet, he though, "High protein and super low carb?! You mean I can constantly eat beef?! I'm in!". But a week later, he felt sick. This diet was too much protein for him.
Juicing gave him good energy the first day but the next few days he felt sluggish, tired and irritable. What he learned, from Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, was that the first week was the hardest to get through and after that your body will "adjust" to not eat whole foods. Well, after the first week, his take away was that a human body is designed to digest food; it is not meant to go days, weeks, or months with just juice. Needless to say, our $300+ juicer is currently sitting pretty in the pantry collecting dust.

Ahhh, and then comes P90, which on and off maybe lasted a total of three weeks. Then P90x comes out and of course we HAVE to get that -- I mean, it has the extra "x" at the end so it must be cooler and better right? And finally, insanity, which promises monster abs in 3 months by following the high intensity interval training videos and meal plans. I mean look at Shaun T! This thing must work right? Maybe. It could... if everyone who bought the workout package were fit enough to last through the workout video!
I'm not making fun of my husband. I'm really not. Okay, maybe just a little. But whatever diet or workout that Ed wanted to do, I would not only support him but I would also help him research each diet/workout. I am telling you all his story because I think he is relatable to many people who are trying to lose weight.
Ed is five foot eight and when we met, he probably weighed around 180 pounds. When we were dating, we ate out a lot. His weight hit 200 pounds within the first two years that we were dating. I, myself, went from 98 pounds to 108 pounds (I'm five foot two).
Ed and I got engaged in 2012. We got married last year in June. It was almost a two year engagement. Within those two years, Ed tried all those diets and workouts that I've told you about. He weighed 170 on our wedding day -- his goal was, and still is, 155 pounds. He didn't meet his target weight but I am still very proud of him. He fit into his suit so much better after shedding off some extra pounds and best of all, he felt great about himself. Many people commented on his significant weight loss and praised him on how great he looks -- he loved every second of the attention :)

We've been married for slightly over seven months now and Ed has "found" some of his lost weight. He weighed 184 pounds on January 23rd. But today, January 26th, he woke up, weighed himself and the scale read 180.2 pounds. Three days, how did he shed 3.8 pounds in 3 days? This is his new thing -- Paleo.
Some of his previous diets I've supported but did not approve of. The paleo diet -- I like! I support! I approve! I call it a diet because it seems like that's what everyone else calls it but I think of it more of a lifestyle. It's about eating whole, real, foods. Cutting out everything that is processed and refined. Choosing to use what nature has given us rather than something that came from a lab.
I was pleasantly amazed at what three days of changing to a paleo lifestyle did for Ed. We cheated a little --we still used organic, grass-fed, whole milk in our coffee in the morning. But other than that, all our meals were within the paleo guidelines. When he put on his suit this morning, he looked trimmer around the waist (maybe the paleo lifestyle made his retain less water weight). His face looked less blotchy and pink (his adorable Irish side of him gives him sensitive skin).
For the next month, I will be posting dishes that are all within the paleo diet/lifestyle guidelines. I will be also be posting Ed's weight loss progress. If you have struggled with weight loss, still are struggling with weight loss, or just are trying to cook healthier meals for you and your family then please cook these meals along side us. We would love to hear your comments and feel your support as we aim for a healthier lifestyle.
